Artist Statement

I am a collage and mixed media artist. I also paint in watercolor and acrylic, specializing in pet portraits. I paint abstracts, florals and Mexican themes.

Bio

I’m an Atlanta native and I’ve been painting since I was three years old. I majored in music in college and played flute professionally for many years until I decided to do something different. I began and operated two businesses, both of which I sold and in 2004 my husband, John, and I moved to Mexico. We were there for ten years and that’s when I became serious about making art again. Upon returning to Atlanta, I studied with some great teachers and found that all I really want to do is paint and make collage!

Life Experience

I studied flute during high school with Warren Little, Principal Flutist of the Atlanta Symphony and won the Symphony Young People’s Award my senior year. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1966 with a Bachelors Degree in Music and I spent the 60’s, 70’s and first half of the 80’s playing flute professionally in Greensboro and Atlanta and teaching many students privately. In the late 80’s I opened a catering operation - “Allegro Caterers” and served all kinds of clients and businesses, including the Canadian and Belgian Consulates. After a few years I sold the company and dedicated myself to sewing and selling quilts. In the 90’s I owned and operated a landscape company, “Dos Rosas” and hired and worked alongside Mexican and Guatemalan immigrants. With my high school and college study of Spanish as a basis, I became fluent in the language and in the early 2000’s we moved to Cuernavaca, Mexico, where I made jewelry and shawls which I sold in various fairs in the area. While living there I designed and built a home, “Casa de la Musa”, which I still have in a small pueblo NW of Cuernavaca: Ahuatenco.

Everything I’ve done in my life I consider art - designing and serving beautiful parties, designing and caring for landscapes, making textile art and jewelry and of course studying and playing music. I’m grateful to my two mothers - my birth mother, Elizabeth, from whom I inherited artistic talent and my creative, adopted mother, Catherine, who was passionate about providing me with the means to learn about and create art and music. They would both be proud of me now!
